Introduction

I’m Jacob. I’ve got a 4x4 Toyota addiction, a fascination with firearms and their mechanical details, an affinity for field watches, and a serious gear habit. A geologist by education, engineer by profession, and an aspiring four-wheel-drive instructor—I’ve been at home in the outdoors my whole life.

This isn’t going to be another cookie-cutter gear blog. TEQandPEW was built for folks who live for dirt roads, range days, everyday carry (EDC), and gear that earns its place. We’ll also feature contributing authors—close friends who share the same values and lifestyle. Everything we write about is gear we’ve bought ourselves, with our own money, and actually use. We don’t believe in safe queens or mall crawlers. If it’s on this site, it’s been in the dirt.

TEQ comes from early Toyota badging, especially in the Land Cruiser world. It’s derived from Japanese katakana characters representing the original “Toyoda” name—part history, part homage.

Pew is pretty self-explanatory. If you’re here—or if you’ve spent time in any of our group chats—you’ve probably seen pew used as a playful verb for shooting, or as a shorthand for firearms in general.

There’s a ton of crossover between the Toyota 4x4 scene and the firearms/EDC community—and most of us spend just as much time outdoors. That’s the thread that ties this all together.

This is where overlanding meets EDC. Welcome to TEQandPEW.

What TEQandPEW Is About

This site is built around gear that works—whether it’s bolted to your rig, strapped to your wrist, or tucked into your waistband.

Expect real-world reviews, hands-on comparisons, loadouts, and lessons learned the hard way. We’re not here to chase trends or flex expensive gear we never use. We cover the stuff that earns its keep through miles, reps, recoil, and weather.

You’ll see:

  • Toyota 4x4 content: bolt-on mods, recovery gear, storage setups, trail-tested upgrades, and vehicle reviews

  • Firearm and EDC posts: practical carry setups, range loadouts, holsters, lights, optics, and what works day-to-day—along with other interesting firearms and related gear

  • Field-tested gear reviews: field watches, knives, flashlights, packs, pouches, and tools

  • Crossover content: trips, camping setups, off-grid power, tactical travel bags, multitools, etc.

We lean hard into function over fluff, and everything we post comes from firsthand use and honest opinions.

Who This Site Is For

TEQandPEW is for the folks who actually use their gear—not just stack it in a safe or post it for likes.

If your driveway is stained brown from the dirt running off your truck… if your idea of a good evening is tinkering with your firearm setup… or if carrying a flashlight and knife is just second nature—this site’s for you.

You might drive a Toyota that’s seen more dirt than pavement. You probably know how to field strip your favorite pistol with your eyes closed, have a recovery strap in the trunk, and a tent you forgot to air out after last weekend’s trip. And chances are, you care more about how something performs than what it costs.

TEQandPEW is built for that crossover mindset—the ones who mod their trucks, carry their tools, and spend real time outside.

If that’s you? Welcome.

What’s Coming

TEQandPEW is just getting started.

We’ve got a long list of posts in the works—everything from the best bolt-ons for your 4Runner, to real-world EDC setups, to range day loadouts and gear that’s earned its keep.

Expect honest reviews, trail-tested upgrades, and tools we’ve beat on long enough to have an opinion. No fluff, no filler—just gear that works, and why we think it’s worth your time (or not).

Some of what’s coming soon:

  • Real-use reviews of gear we actually carry and run

  • Toyota-focused build content

  • Range and workshop setups

  • Loadouts for the field, road, or range

  • Watch breakdowns, flashlight nerd-outs, and everything in between

We’re building this one post at a time—slow, intentional, and rooted in the stuff we actually care about.

If you're into that, stick around. It’s going to get good.
